SharedBook Inc., the Reverse Publishing Platform provider, is hosting the SharedBook Open API Challenge, a Web development contest to award the best extensions from third party applications to SharedBook in three different categories: social networking, photo sharing and desktop applications or collaborative online communities. Entries will be accepted through Sept. 30.
The SharedBook Open API Challenge http://www.sharedbook.com/apichallenge is open to extensions from any third party applications that flow their text, photographs or other content into SharedBook’s Reverse Publishing Platform for on-demand output.
SharedBook’s Open API enables the automatic flow of Web content into a structured book product that can be previewed and purchased immediately, or personalized further. This provides a means for Web sites to monetize archived materials and user-generated content and build brand awareness through the book’s pass along value.
Developers can build extensions to connect any Web site with content that could be useful in printed book format to SharedBook. This information might include branded content, statistical information or user-generated content, for example, which can be found on gardening, online dating, real estate, sports, travel, and weight loss sites, among others.
A panel of five will evaluate the entries based on their business utility, originality and technical elegance including Dion Almaer, Co-founder of Ajaxian.com, and Benny Schlesinger, Chief Technical Officer, Jacada, Ltd. (Nasdaq: JCDA).
“Our developers inspired this contest when they were able to show us a working example of the Blog2Print blog printing widget in a few days,” said Caroline Vanderlip, Chief Executive Officer, SharedBook Inc. “We look forward to seeing what other types of connections the Web development community can build to SharedBook’s API quickly, and hope to review some concepts that we haven’t considered.”
Web developers have produced API wrappers and components connecting clients to SharedBook’s platform using Java, PHP and Python languages to date. Interested participants are welcome to use the source material available at http://www.sharedbook.com/dev/resources.html as a starting point.
Projects can be installed as plug-ins to existing online applications or implemented as standalone Web applications. There is no limitation to the number of submissions that an individual or a team can enter.
These are some more specific examples of the types of third party applications that could be integrated into SharedBook’s Reverse Publishing Platform by category:
1. Connect SharedBook to a Social Networking Site

New York, NY (PRWEB) October 3, 2007
SharedBook Inc., the Reverse Publishing Platform provider, enhanced the SharedBook Open API Challenge http://www.sharedbook.com/apichallenge today – offering the winners a 20 percent share of any books sold from their development efforts, and extending the entry deadline to Oct. 31. As an additional incentive, any developers that participate are now eligible to receive a 10 percent share of any book proceeds that result from their contest entry.
Using the SharedBook open application programming interface (API) http://www.sharedbook.com/dev, developers can flow content from any Web site – archived materials, database content, photographs and user-generated content, among other items – into a structured book product that can be purchased immediately, or personalized further.
The SharedBook Open API Challenge will award the best extensions from third party applications to SharedBook in three categories: 1) social networking, 2) photo sharing, and 3) desktop applications or collaborative online communities.
Base pricing for the API books is set at $ 19.95 for softcover and $ 27.95 for hardcover. Therefore, the winning developers will receive a minimum of $ 3.99 each time a book sells as a result of their development. Winners will also receive their choice of an OpenMoko Neo 1973 mobile phone, an 8GB iPhone? or $ 500.
“We realize that it takes time to create a working demo and we want to ensure that interested developers cannot lose by entering this contest,” said Caroline Vanderlip, Chief Executive Officer, SharedBook Inc. “Any concept that reaches the working demo stage has the potential to become a full solution, which now entitles the developer to at least a 10 percent share of any books sold as a result of their efforts.”
A panel of five will evaluate the entries based on their business utility, originality and technical elegance including Dion Almaer, Co-founder of Ajaxian.com, and Benny Schlesinger, Chief Technical Officer, Jacada, Ltd. (Nasdaq: JCDA).

PyCon 2008, the sixth annual Python community conference, will be held in Chicago from March 14 to 16, 2008 at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare Hotel. Business leaders, developers, and enthusiasts will gather for the largest and most comprehensive Python meeting in history. Python, the popular open source programming language that is increasingly seen as an alternative to Java, is currently used by thousands of organizations including Google, Industrial Light & Magic, iRobot, NASA, and YouTube.
“Almost from the start, Python’s development has been community-driven,” says Python creator Guido van Rossum. “I always look forward to PyCon to find out what the community has in mind. It can be as educational for me as it is for the other conference participants. For my part, I will present Python 3000 and discuss how it differs from Python 2.x, why you should care, and last (but not least) what to do with your existing code. I expect this to be the best PyCon yet.”
With sessions on everything from an introduction to Python to advanced topics, PyCon 2008 provides an opportunity for audiences of all levels to gain invaluable insight and learn about new tools, and techniques. Everyone from casual users to avid fans, and even business leaders can attend talks and tutorials to fit their conference goals or hone their Python skills.
Confirmed keynote speakers include Python creator Guido van Rossum, who will discuss the upcoming release of the highly anticipated Python 3000, the new version of Python that has been in the works for two years. Ivan Krstić of the non-profit association One Laptop Per Child, designed to provide laptops for children in developing countries who receive little or no education, will also address the audience in a keynote.
“This is an exciting time for Python. We’re going to see some significant growth and changes in the coming year,” says PyCon 2008 chair David Goodger. “This conference is the place to be to hear about them first.”
“What makes PyCon so exceptional is the instant immersion in the brilliant, vibrant, and friendly Python community, which is the real draw for me,” says PyCon 2008 publicity coordinator Catherine Devlin.
PyCon is unique in that it is truly a community event. It is run entirely by volunteers. Not just enthusiasts, scores of Python programmers, or “Pythonistas,” are dedicating their personal time to the weeklong event. PyCon 2008 kicks off with a tutorial day on March 13, where attendees can learn in-depth from the experts. The expo hall, where sponsors and exhibitors will be giving away free goodies, will be open March 14 and 15, while the conference itself takes place from March 14 to 16. 360-degree feedback provider Panoramic Feedback was inundated this week with requests to Beta-test its new user interface. The boldly-designed Smart Administration System for Surveys (SASS) will be available to Beta users in January.
The company, a world leader in 360-degree feedback, decided it would have to freeze its list of Beta testers and stop accepting applications, in order to fully support those it had already accepted.
“We were pleased to see how many knowledgable users were eager to participate,” said CEO Esther Kohn-Bentley (website: http://www.panoramicfeedback.com). “They told us they wanted to be at the leading edge of the finest solution in multi-source feedback.
“We hear that our Beta announcement started a tremendous buzz in the HR, OD, and training communities, because they were looking for more user-friendly, flexible and customizable 360 capabilities.”
Intuitive New Design
SASS was designed by veteran developer Aaron Bentley, and co-written by developers Maru Newby and Mike Lin. Their efforts were supported by client services manager Elena Albegova, who co-ordinated a survey of users of the previous interface.
The developers used today’s most effective and secure technologies: Python, Ext, Kid, TurboGears and ReST, on the reliable Linux platform used by Panoramic Feedback since before it was trendy.
SASS runs on the Internet, featuring an intuitive tab interface which reduces uncertainty for the user. Many of the central functions can be controlled directly from simple chart displays. Help screens pop up instantly on request, and disappear when no longer required.
The developers’ innovative use of ReST will also make it easier for Panoramic Feedback’s writers to adjust the system’s wording or ultimately to translate it into other languages.
“We named the interface SASS because it is truly sassy. It’s smart, assertive, and strong,” said Kohn-Bentley.
“Because 360-degree feedback is so powerful, touching the lives of many individuals, the system must be flexible and reliable. SASS is the ultimate intuitive interface.”
Panoramic Feedback has a history of innovation. It was the first 360-degree feedback system to use the Internet, a decade ago. More recently, it became the first system to provide feedback in Chinese, Japanese and Korean. And now it will provide the most up-to-date, friendly and powerful interface available.
About Panoramic Feedback
Panoramic Feedback (http://www.panoramicfeedback.com) is a respected international provider of 360-degree feedback. Business leaders, developers, and fans of the Python open source programming language used by Google, Industrial Light & Magic and YouTube meet March 13 to 20, 2008 at the Crowne Plaza Chicago O’Hare Hotel for PyCon 2008. This annual community conference showcases the numerous advantages and exceptional usability of Python, which is rapidly becoming the industry standard dynamic programming language.
“We use Python throughout our infrastructure,” says Chris DiBona, Open Source Programs Manager at Google. “Making extensive use of it and other open source languages and libraries allows us to rapidly build and deploy highly scalable systems.”
PyCon 2008 crams hundreds of talks, tutorials and presentations into the week-long conference. Featured this year are three days of conference sessions, a day of tutorials, in which attendees learn firsthand from Python experts, and four days of development sprints, where participants brainstorm and collaborate on projects in person. Presenters from organizations such as Google, Lockheed Martin, Red Hat, Caltech, UC Berkeley, and Oxford University will give talks on a wide variety of topics ranging from programming Python for the One Laptop Per Child project to Python use in games such as Counterstrike. Other notable sessions discuss Microsoft’s open source implementation of Python for the .NET Framework, Python 3000, scripting for the Microsoft Office system, and Jython, an implementation of Python on the Java platform that brings dynamic language features to the Java virtual machine.
“Python is consistently the ‘glue’ that brings White Oak custom software solutions together,” says Alan Broder, President of White Oak Technologies. “Our business has grown by leveraging the power of dynamic languages and open source solutions. Python is a standard part of our toolbox for a variety of purposes, including data analysis, text processing, cluster process control, web applications, rapid prototyping and system administration.”
Python has recently been in the spotlight as the engine behind some of the most recognizable sites on the Internet.
“Python has been critical in allowing us to develop and scale the YouTube site efficiently,” says Cuong Do, engineering manager for YouTube. “There have been many cases where urgent issues were resolved through a few lines of carefully written Python code.”
Python’s use by news organizations like the New York Times, by movie makers such as Disney and Industrial Light & Magic, and by game manufacturers like Valve puts Python in front of millions of people on a daily basis. In the scientific world, the use of Python by NASA, the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratories, and AstraZeneca illustrates the practical relevance of Python to the world’s leading scientific centers. Activities at PyCon will show why Python was selected as the “Programming Language of 2007″ by the TIOBE Index, a measurement of language popularity across industries.
“Microsoft is excited to support the industry standard Python language on the .NET Framework and in Silverlight,” says Dave Mendlen, director of Developer Marketing in the Developer Division at Microsoft Corp. “Dynamic languages are of growing importance to developers, and we are glad to provide comprehensive support for these languages, and particularly Python, on the Microsoft platform.”
“We chose Python because it combines structure and ease; developers love it and it’s accessible for administrators,” says Erik Dahl, Co-Founder and CTO of Zenoss. “The end result is that our product evolves quickly, it’s easy to maintain and people like working with it.”
Due to its versatility and ease of use, many organizations are turning to Python in order to write quality software in an efficient and timely manner.
“The role of the Python language for Enthought clients is evolving from a ‘useful tool’ into a critical framework at the center of their technology strategy,” says Travis Vaught, CFO of Enthought, Inc. “Scientists increasingly see Python as the best way to do numerical computing with an extensible framework.”

Python guru, David Beazley, returns to the Big Nerd Ranch, Inc. June 9-13, 2008. Python, one of the most widely used object-oriented programming languages, has earned a well-deserved reputation for assisting software developers in “getting the job done” with concise, elegant code. Whether you’re talking about complex database driven web sites, robots, or system administration, organizations as diverse as Fermilab, Yahoo, Google, and Redhat are leveraging its power for their own projects. Python consistently proves to be a powerhouse in the software and web development world.
Python Bootcamp at the Big Nerd Ranch takes its Python training class one step further. By teaching Python within a real-world context, David Beazley, author of the widely acclaimed book ‘Python Essential Reference,’ demonstrates how to effectively apply Python to a wide range of practical problems. More importantly, he shows you how to integrate Python with existing software and systems.
“One of the greatest challenges a programmer faces when learning a new language is making it work in the real world,” commented David Beazley, Python Bootcamp instructor. “Unless you understand how to take what you’ve learned and incorporate that with other applications on a system, you are going to be frustrated. Also, Python was never created to be used in isolation–it was always intended to play well with other software and systems. That is why integration is a key component of my curriculum.”

Today Resolver Systems announces the signature of its first French corporate client for Resolver One?: Credit Cooperatif (Groupe Natixis/Banques Populaires). Resolver One provides Credit Cooperatif with a Rapid Application Development tool for analysing and presenting business data using a familiar spreadsheet interface. Resolver One integrates databases, code and IT-developed components to create powerful and easy-to-use solutions – all using your existing knowledge of spreadsheets.
Louis Jaouan, Director of Financial Risk at Credit Cooperatif commented:
“In the Financial Risk department, in order to rapidly respond to new needs, we have to write a number of tools ourselves, to access different sources of information and manipulate them, all without having to go to our IT department. We use Excel and VBA, but we prefer Python for its combination of simplicity and power. We were looking to better link spreadsheets with Python programming, and Resolver One seemed to be the most elegant solution because it was based on Python but also gave us compatibility with our IT team’s architectural choice of Microsoft .NET.
We had been looking at using IronPython for a year but were hesitant to take the first step until we saw the elegant and secure environment provided by Resolver One. I signed up as a beta user as soon as I learned of its existence. Its original conception is intellectually elegant and even though we so far use only a fraction of its capabilities, we have already witnessed a significant increase in the speed at which we deploy new control tools.”
Jean Viry-Babel, Head of Sales, Resolver Systems, added:
“Resolver One changes the way businesses think about and use spreadsheets, we are thrilled to have Credit Cooperatif as our first French Corporate Customer”
About Resolver Systems:
Resolver Systems was founded in 2005 to produce a next generation spreadsheet. The founders, Giles Thomas, Robert Smithson and Patrick Kemmis, had all struggled with the challenges of running multi-million or multi-billion dollar businesses through poorly debugged spreadsheets. Their solution – Resolver One – seamlessly integrates a powerful and flexible programming language and a traditional spreadsheet environment. Already Resolver One has received extensive interest from companies in the financial, medical and academic communities. Resolver Systems
