lynda.com, the leader in self-paced digital media and design training, today introduced Ruby on Rails Beyond the Basics.
In this sequel to the popular Ruby on Rails Essential Training, expert instructor Kevin Skoglund teaches comprehensive techniques for web developers who already feel comfortable with the fundamentals of Ruby and the Rails MVC framework. This training will help developers move toward creating full-featured Ruby on Rails applications. Kevin begins by explaining how to update software and projects to the latest versions. He then demonstrates alternative ways to interact with Ruby and your Rails applications and teaches the intermediate aspects of the Ruby language. Kevin provides step-by-step instructions for creating a custom blog and content management application. He uses this practical example to show how to work with database migrations, how to get more from ActiveRecord and avoid common pitfalls, how to create flexible controllers and views, and how to improve performance, security, and code management. Exercise files accompany the tutorials.
“This is the perfect resource for anyone developing a real website in Ruby on Rails,” says Lynda Weinman, CEO of lynda.com. “It covers not only in-depth programming concepts, but also the ‘care and feeding’ tips you’ll need to efficiently maintain your Ruby on Rails development and production environments.”

ClassroomM, a company specializing in training and programming solutions for Mac, iPhone and iPad, announces the addition of online iPhone and iPad training from one of the world’s leading authors and instructors in the field, Stephen Kochan. Divided into three courses and starting with the important basics, the training teaches the aspiring developer how to write iPhone and iPad applications. Featuring more than 28 hours of live instruction, the training is available to everyone and is delivered via live webcasts divided into lectures, two times per week.
“Students can now take advantage of the latest technology to learn in their home or office for a fraction of the cost of a university or training company class. I’ve been delighted by the response from my students, who take my classes from all over the world. I’m looking forward to expanding our offerings over the course of this year,” says Stephen Kochan, CEO and President of ClassroomM.
Kochan is the author of more than 10 books on C, Unix, Mac and iPhone programming, including the Amazon.com bestseller “Programming in Objective-C 2.0.” In his new iPhone and iPad training course, Kochan provides step-by-step instructions using webcasts so that students can participate live or view the recorded lessons in the convenience of their home or office. The online course provides students the time to read the text and try exercises before the next class. If the student misses a webcast, he can always view the recorded webcast, which is available for review up to six months after completing the course.
Unlike other iPhone/iPad training courses, Kochan’s course focuses on teaching Objective-C, the programming language for iPhone and iPad. Most other courses teach iPhone/ipad SDK and tutorial programs directly, without tapping into the depth of Objective-C language fundamentals and Foundation Framework. While many find it easy to follow the sample codes provided in other courses, when it comes to programming one’s own iPhone app, students often find that their shaky Objective-C background makes it hard to implement any customized feature.
Kochan’s iPhone and iPad training course is divided into three parts. Students can register for individual parts based on their experience, or for all three. The first part teaches how to program in Objective-C 2.0. In this part, Kochan, assumes some basic programming background and guides students through live demonstrations on how to write programs in Objective-C.
Using the knowledge from part one, in part two, Kochan teaches the Foundation framework in Objective-C. The Foundation framework defines a base layer of Objective-C classes for working with objects such as numbers, strings, arrays and dictionaries. Understanding the Foundation framework is critical to becoming a successful iPhone developer. In addition, part 2 of the course features an entire lecture devoted to memory management, a critical topic to understand in order to write leak-free applications.
The third and final part of the iPhone and ipad training course is designed for the programmer who knows Objective-C and covers the iPhone SDK. In this part, Kochan teaches how to create basic iPhone/iPad applications
Kochan’s training courses are already being well-received by students:
“I can honestly say the content Steve has put here is well worth the time and energy if you’re dedicated to being successful at this. No other author has put forth so much effort in providing quality content. For that I thank you, Steve.”
“I was blown away. It makes such a huge difference to have someone explain the concepts and answer questions as you go! I now understand everything I read previously.”
The amount of live instruction from a world-leading teacher and author provided in Kochan’s iPhone and iPad training course is an incredible value that shouldn’t be missed. And at only 0 for all three parts, the course is affordable for everybody. For more information or to start leaning how to program iPhone and iPad applications, visit http://ClassroomM.com.
Individuals interested in learning more about Objective-C can also visit Kochan’s Objective-C community with more than 6,000 members online at http://classroomm.com/objective-c.

PointAbout to Offer Introductory Training Mobile Applications Development
Washington, DC (PRWEB) October 18, 2010
PointAbout, a Washington DC based interactive consulting and development firm, is set to launch a series of training classes for developers interested in mobile applications development. The mobile apps industry is gearing up to be a multi-million dollar industry with heavy consumer interest in both simple to use lifestyle applications and engaging casual games.
To foster more developers taking action to create new and interesting mobile apps, PointAbout has developed courses in Objective-C, the programming language used to develop iPhone devices, and Java programming language for Android devices.
Beginning in November a 3-day Introduction to Objective-C course begins at 1410Q; located at 1410 Q Street, NW. The dates for the course are November 6th, 13th, and 20th, which are the first three Saturdays of the month. Each class will meet from 9am-2pm and includes a 30 minute catered lunch break. More advanced classes on iOS development will follow.
Matthew Burke, a George Washington University professor and previously teaching for St. Mary’s College of Maryland, will conduct the Introduction to Objective-C course. Mr. Burke is also a professional software developer having worked with Ars Digita, SAIC, completed numerous corporate contracts, and has experience developing for Palm devices. For almost a year, he has been with PointAbout developing apps for iPhone and Android.
The Introduction to Objective-C courses are sponsored by Disruptathon and the Washington Mobile Developers Meetup Group.
Additional course information:
Size: 15
Cost: 9, early bird 9 (before October 30)
Course requirements: bring your own Mac laptop with Xcode 3.2.4 and the Mac OS X 10.6 SDK installed. You should have a programming background in an object-oriented language like Java, C#, C++, Ruby, or Python.
Class Advantages: The schedule of the class is designed to help students master the material. The 5 hour day makes it easier for students to stay focused in class and have time between class sessions to practice and reflect on the material covered. The class focuses on Mac OS X development, rather than iOS development. This allows the student to concentrate on learning Objective-C without the additional overhead of complications involved in running on the iOS platform (such as code signing). Topics specific to iOS are covered in future classes after students have mastered the fundamentals.

Creators of PhoneGap, a ground-breaking mobile application development framework, will teach web developers how to build mobile applications in HTML, CSS and JavaScript while still taking advantage of core features of the iPhone, Google Android and Blackberry. This full-day mobile app development training session takes place in San Francisco on July 19, 2009. Attendees can register at http://nitobi.com/services/phonegap/training/schedule_july19/.
Created at iPhoneDevCamp 2008 by Nitobi Inc., PhoneGap is an open source initiative for bringing native device capabilities to mobile browsers. With PhoneGap, you can author apps in HTML and JavaScript and still take advantage of features like geo location, camera, vibration, local storage and sound. At the end of the training session, attendees will know how to build apps for iPhone, Google Android and Blackberry, and how to contribute back to the open source PhoneGap project.
PhoneGap gained widespread recognition in April when the project won the LaunchPad competition at Web 2.0 Expo. Since then, hundreds of PhoneGap applications have been built and submitted to the Apple app store including, the Blok-Buster (http://bit.ly/Izyrr) game, Coovents (http://bit.ly/mYqIw) for New York happy hour listings and Roadtrippr (http://bit.ly/Qvxep) for finding cool spots to visit, no matter where you are.
“Building apps on different mobile platforms is hard and time consuming,” said Andre Charland, CEO of Nitobi. “We designed PhoneGap for the large group of developers out there who know how to write for standard languages, like JavaScript, CSS and HTML, and who don’t have the time or inclination to learn new languages, like Objective-C. They can use PhoneGap to write an app that will work on many different phones.”
PhoneGap training attendees will learn how to:
Set up a development environment
Compile for multiple platforms
Run code in an emulator
Debug HTML and JavaScript
Access native APIs, including location, camera, accelerometer, contacts, and more via JavaScript
Optimize JavaScript for mobile devices
Build a mobile application that runs offline
Use CSS transitions, animations and transforms to create native looking interfaces
Use the Canvas for advanced graphics
Use mobile JavaScript libraries, such as XUI and Dashcode to build mobile applications faster.
